6 Causes Of Enlarged Heart

A heart is considered large when it has a thickened wall or dilated chambers, making it bigger than normal. This condition arises from underlying medical conditions which result from too much pressure on the heart, which is either caused by an infection or inflammation of the myocardium (heart muscles) and pericardium (sacs that surrounds the heart). Listed below, are some heart complications that can cause the heart to become inflamed or infected:

1. High blood pressure                                                                                                                                                                       High Blood Pressure

When the flow of blood along the coronary artery (the artery that supplies blood to the heart) is raised, the pressure becomes intense. As a result of this, the heart will be required to strain its muscles for an effective pump, in order to meet up with the pressure at which blood flows. High blood pressure often leads to enlargement of the heart.

2. Pericardial effusion                                                                                                                                                                         pericaldial

Pericardial effusion is basically secretion the fluid around the heart. This occurs when there is an abnormal accumulation of fluid in the pericardial cavity. This is usually due to the limited space in the pericardial cavity and it ends up leading to an enlargement of the heart.

3. Hemochromatosis                                                                                                                                                                          Hemochromatosis

This is a disease caused by an iron disorder where the body gathers more than enough iron needed in the body. Although the human body needs iron, when it is in excess, it becomes harmful to the body. As a result of this, some organs get damaged, including the heart. The heart muscle becomes weak and the left ventricle, in particular, becomes enlarged.

4. Cardiomyopathy                                                                                                                                                                           cardimyopathy

This pertains to the disease of the heart muscle. Cardiomyopathy weakens and stretches the muscle of the heart and thereby, lowers its effectiveness.  Once a disease is spotted in the heart, the size and shape of such heart would be affected and this is otherwise known as cardiomegaly (enlargement of the heart).

5. Anemia                                                                                                                                                                                         anemia

Anemia also has its way of affecting the heart. It is concerned with slow haemoglobin or red blood cells. Due to this, there will be an insufficient supply of oxygen and blood to the heart. The heart is then required to work harder to meet up with the production of oxygen and blood. This eventually causes a strain or weakness in the muscle of the heart or the sac that covers it. It is usually associated with fatigue, chest pain, weakness, pale appearance, and so on.

6. Alcohol abuse                                                                                                                                                                                alcohol

When alcohol is taken in excess for a long period of time, the heart becomes affected. Alcohol steadily weakens the muscles of the heart, which in turn, disrupts the effective flow of blood. This eventually results in cardiomyopathy (disease of the heart) and could lead to an enlargement of the heart.

Conclusion

The heart is a major organ of the body and a defect to it can cause several health complications. If not taken care of, it could lead to heart failure which might result in death. We’ve pointed out above, some health issues that could cause enlargement of the heart (cardiomegaly).
