5 ways to have a hydrated and healthy skin

Everyone has that dream of a silky smooth skin that doesn’t appear dry when scratched. But to get to this, there are certain steps that you need to take.

Below are some tips to let you know what you have been doing wrong and how to achieve your dream skin.

#1. Know your skin type

Not everyone has the same skin and as such what works for someone might not work for you. Find out if your skin is naturally dry and flaky, oily or a combination of both. Find out if you have sensitive skin and stay away from creams and soaps that could irritate your skin. Skin conditions like eczema, acne, and others should be handled with care. Avoid pinching off acnes as they could leave black spots. Avoid using harsh skin products and see a doctor for advice if necessary.

#2. Regular exercise

Exercise tones the skin and improves your blood circulation. A better blood circulation means more nutrients gets to the skin, giving it more shine. It also improves your entire health, allowing your skin depict what’s on the inside. Try doing exercises like cardio to help with your circulation, weight training to tone your muscles and give your skin a smooth appearance and also yoga to improve your flexibility.

#3. Stay away from hot water

Try as much as possible to avoid taking hot showers because it removes moisture and protective oils from the skin, causing it to harden and dry out. Hot water also opens skin pores and could facilitate entry of bacteria into the skin. Cool water, on the other hand, tightens and tones the skin. If cold water is too much to start with, start with lukewarm water and slowly go for cooler water with time. The face, neck and upper chest is covered with sensitive skin and should be handled with care.

#4. Try some moisturizer and exfoliation

Try regular exfoliation to remove the outer layer of the skin. This keeps your skin feeling smooth and fresh. In other to keep the skin, especially sensitive areas, youthful and free from wrinkles, use a moisturizer and facial cream to hydrate and cleanse the skin daily to prevent it from drying out. Apply lotions or creams like coconut oil after a shower, while the skin is a bit damp, to leave the moisture trapped in. You could also use a humidifier to moisturize the air in your room to ease dry and itchy skin.

#5. Eat a balanced diet

The hair and skin are two places that show what you eat. Try incorporating plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean protein and whole grains for glowing skin. Foods like nuts and avocado help the skin retain its elasticity. Mangoes, sweet potatoes, spinach, and blueberries contain vitamin A, E and C and they play a role in skin health.


You would want to apply some sunscreen before stepping out in the sun because the rays could be damaging to the skin. Remember never to go to bed with makeup on, no matter how tired you seem.
