The Major Parts Of The Safety System

The Harness: A harness is a piece of equipment designed to attach your body to the rope. It usually consists of two major parts, the belt and leg loops. The belt is designed to absorb the majority of force put on the harness and transfer it to your hips and pelvis, which are the parts of your body most capable of sustaining such forces without injury. The leg loops wrap around each thigh, and primarily function to prevent the belt portion of the harness from riding up above the wearer’s waist. If the belt were allowed to ride up above the waist, it could restrict breathing and even cause suffocation. Harnesses are produced by many major gear manufacturers, and can usually be had for between $40 – $120, depending on brand and features.

The Rope: A modern climbing rope is constructed of Nylon, and is woven in what is known as a Kernmantle style. It has two major parts, the inner weight bearing yarns (or kern), and the woven protective sheath (or mantle). The rope primarily acts like a giant spring or shock absorber to absorb the force of a fall before it reaches the climber’s harness, a quality known as “dynamic” (i.e. it stretches). Beware that some ropes are known as “static” (they don’t stretch very much) and are not suitable for most climbing applications and should be avoided by the beginner climber. Modern ropes vary in diameter depending on their intended usage, usually come in lengths from 50 – 70 meters (165 – 230 feet), and generally cost between $120 – $250 each.

The Belay: Simply put, A belay is a method of applying friction to a running rope. Generally while climbing you will be working in a team of two, a climber and a belayer. The belayer’s function is to pay out or take in rope as required by the climber and, most importantly, to hold any fall (by applying friction to the rope) taken by the climber. Most people use a specialized belay device which assists them in applying friction to the rope, although there are methods of belay which do not use any special device. The belayer’s job of keeping the climber from hitting the ground (or anything else) is understandably quite important to the entire function of the safety system, thus people new to belaying should take an instructional course from a qualified instructor before taking a live person’s life in their hands.
