Childhood obesity is a condition where excess body fat affects a child’s health or well-being, negatively. Studies so far has shown how rampant childhood obesity has gone, and if not taken into consideration soon, might become worse. Most times, the blame is kept on the parents and guardians and the affected children are also likely to be disturbed emotionally, physically, mentally, and socially. Childhood obesity, however, can be prevented.

Below are some ways by which we can reduce the rate of childhood obesity in our world today.

1. Encourage healthy nutrition

Children are, most times, open to junk foods and many of them hardly eat healthy meals. The kind of food these children eat, plays a great role in their health. Healthy nutrition should be encouraged, and foods with high content of fats and calories should be avoided as much as possible. They are required to eat more of fruits and vegetables, food rich in fibers, and some other nutritious meals.

2. Promote health education

Most parents and guidance fail to educate their children about health and its importance. Most times, we feel they should have learnt them in schools but it is not always the case, as they are required to know much more than you think they should. They should know why they shouldn’t take more than a particular amount of ice-cream in a day and why too many doughnuts might be risky.

3. Allow enough rest

A healthy sleep promotes good health. While we rest, the body system tends to work more effectively, and breaks down unwanted substances in the body. That way, the risk of accumulating much fats in the body is reduced.

4. Limit screen time

In this case, discipline is required. Children are always attracted by the screen, and many of them can barely do without it in a day. It is good, especially if what they are watching is educational, but there should always be a limit. Your child shouldn’t sit in front of the television the whole day. Such child would tend to become lazy and the body metabolism might be slowed down. Two hours is enough time for a child to spend with the television in a day.

5. Allow physical activities

We should always understand that the life of a child is totally different from that of an adult. They should be allowed to jump around and play. Allow them to engage in physical activities; let them work themselves out, rather than sitting on a spot all day. This will not only make them active, but also help to burn down calories and fats in the body.

6. Don’t tease your child with his/her weight

This is where some adults go wrong. It seems rather discouraging when a child is mocked with his or her weight and size. You are likely to worsen the problem of such child. Don’t mock your child about being too fat or bigger than you can handle. The child might lose emotional stability and self-esteem. Also, you shouldn’t talk about your personal weight challenges in the presence of your child/children. That won’t be a better way to encourage them, as you could be doing otherwise.

Conclusion

It is always best to treat obesity in childhood, than allowing such child to grow into an adult with it. Obesity increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, and such child is likely to have a lesser death span. You might be doing the greatest thing ever by protecting that child from obesity.

Younger children are more susceptible to dehydration mainly because they have larger surface areas than adults and their bodies function with more fluids than our bodies. Dehydration is said to have occurred when the amount of fluid lost from the body is more than the fluid intake of the body. Dehydration can end in lethargy, heart and kidney failure and even death.

Dehydration in young children can occur when they aren’t feeding well, are exposed to the atmosphere for long periods, or have diarrhoea and/or vomiting.

However unlike adults, little bouts of diarrhoea is able to end in dehydration of the young child. The ‘young child’ in this article refers to a child below the age of 2. Dehydration in children is many times a hospital emergency however, at this age, these children are mostly unable to communicate well.

It is therefore necessary for us to watch out for things such as:

1.Decreased Urination

It is abnormal for a child wearing diapers to not have urinated at least once in 6 hours. In addition, if when the child does urinate it has a stronger smell than normal, has a decreased volume and its colour is deeper than usual, your child is most likely to be dehydrated and needs rehydration. A complete lack of urine is usually pointing towards kidney shut down and should be addressed with immediate effect.

2. Dry mouth

The inner part of the lips, the tongue and other parts of the mouth should always be moist (except your child has xerostomia, which is a diseased condition). Therefore if you notice that the mouth of your child is no longer moist but dry he/she is most likely dehydrated and needs to be rehydrated.

3. Crying without tears

Children mostly cry with tears. Crying without tears is an important sign that the child’s body doesn’t think it has enough fluids to lose a few millilitres via crying. Therefore, if your baby is crying without tears please make sure you get him to the hospital straight away. It is better to be safe than sorry.

4. Loss of skin turgor

Fluid in our body is usually one of the things that helps the skin maintain its elasticity. The test for skin turgor is simple; expose the abdomen of your child, pinch a bit of his/her skin between your fingers and release, it should return back immediately. However, a delay in return is a sign of dehydration and means the child must see the doctor as soon as possible.

5.Sunken fontanel

The fontanel is the soft boneless portion at the top of your child’s head. On a normal basis, it should be flat. When it is depressed and soft, it is a very serious sign of dehydration, one that needs medical emergency.

Conclusion

Dehydration is a very serious condition especially in young children. It is therefore very important that you try to prevent the causes of dehydration such as vomiting or diarrhoea. It is also important to rehydrate children when it seems they might be moderately dehydrated.

Dealing with obesity is probably much easier for adults than it is for kids, mainly because it’s easier for adults to understand the dangers that obesity might lead them into. Kids on the other hand, will find it a bit hard to understand when you’re trying to explain to them how being overweight could lead to cancer or type 2 diabetes.

The second reason why it might be easier to deal with obesity in adults than it is with kids, simply boils down to one word: “willpower”. Adults usually have greater willpower than kids.

To overcome these hurdles, and successfully deal with obesity in your child, here are some tips we think you should try:

#1 Teach them why they need to treat obesity

You probably won’t be able to get through to kids about weight loss, by getting all technical, and instead you might just end up causing them to get scared.

Instead, think of a fun way to pass across the message. Instead of reading out, to them, the long list of dangers that come with being obese, simply help them see what they could accomplish if they lost just a little bit more weight.

#2 Monitor what they watch on television and how much time they spend in front of a television

Kids learn and imbibe habits, quite a bit from what they see on TV, and you should be careful what you let them watch. Food advertisements, in particular, could be a problem as they tend to leave kids craving for the foods they saw on TV.

#3 Create a fun workout session for them

There are so many ways you could get your kids to work out without them knowing that that’s what they’re doing. You don’t need to make it obvious that they need to work out. Just think of an innovative way to keep them physically active during the day.

It could be a game that you play with them outside. It could be a video game–the type where you control what happens in the game by moving your body parts.

#4 Clear your fridge

You can’t expect your kids to eat healthy when you aren’t eating healthy yourself. So to make sure your kids maintain healthy eating habits, clear out your fridge of all unhealthy foods, replacing them instead, with more weight-loss friendly foods and healthy snacks.

Conclusion

You don’t necessarily need to wait until your kid becomes overweight before trying to do something about it. The time to start is now. Teach your kids how to eat healthy and make sure they’re physically active through the day.

Things you might be doing ignorantly today might be increasing your child’s risk of becoming overweight.

As a parent, you strive hard to teach your kids morals, kindness, manners, independence, and all these are very vital in a child’s life. But sometimes parents tend to forget one other important thing: the value of being physically active and healthy. The majority of a child’s attitudes about food and nutrition, their desire to be physically active and even their weight will be directly influenced by their parents.

Here are 4 things that you might be doing that might lead to an increase in the risk of your child developing obesity.

1. Your fridge is packed full of junk foods

You greatly increase your child’s risk of becoming obese if you as a parent aren’t eating healthy. You can’t pack junk food into your fridge and claim, “it’s for the adults only”, and yet expect your child to be a healthy eater. So the first step in reducing your child’s risk of being obese or having poor eating habits is to make sure that your fridge is always packed full of healthy foods.

2. You don’t encourage breakfast in your home

Research has shown that having breakfast, for children, is associated with better academic performance and a reduced risk of obesity. In fact, one piece of advice given to everyone trying to lose weight is to stop skipping breakfast.

Breakfast is undoubtedly the most important meal of the day. Throughout the night, you’ve been fasting and your metabolic rate has been lowered. So it’s important that you eat something in the morning to kick off your metabolism.

Secondly, your kids are at a higher risk of overeating during lunch when they don’t eat breakfast.

3. You spend most of your day in front of the television

A study showed that mothers who encouraged their kids to exercise and eat well (and actually lead by example) were more likely to succeed in getting their kids to engage in physical activities and adhere to healthy eating habits.

You can’t be a couch potato and expect your kids to be physically active. To some extent, what kids see their parents do is what they would most likely do.

4. You use food to reward or withhold on a regular basis

If you’re one of those parents that uses food as a reward for good behavior, or if they do well at school, then it’s high time you stop. Using food to reward a young child may set them up for developing a whole host of confusing concepts about eating.

Similarly, studies have shown that children whose parents deprived them of palatable foods on a regular basis were more likely to want the restricted food even more. For instance, if you tell a kid that they can’t have a cookie, and yet they see you eating one, they’re likely to overindulge on cookies once they have the opportunity.

So inasmuch as you’re trying to teach them to eat healthy, you shouldn’t totally deprive them of some tasty snacks once in a while.

Conclusion

The key to training your child right is leading by example. If you miss this key, then you’re probably wasting your time trying to teach that child how to do the right things, because they’ll only end up doing what they see you do.

CHD can generally be managed or prevented at any age, but it’s best to prevent it from childhood as it could be a lot tougher to deal with later in life.

Below are some ways by which you can prevent heart disease in children:

1. Encourage physical activity

Physical activity has to do with sustained body movement which requires expending energy. For some minutes or a couple of hours daily, you should encourage your kid to walk, run around, and perform some exercise or the other. It helps to greatly reduce the risk of developing any heart complications.

2. Choose a healthy eating plan

What we eat has a major impact on our wellness. Foods such as ice-cream, carbonated beverages, carbs, deep-fried foods, and others which contain fats and added sugars, are unhealthy for both adults and children. For healthy feeding, foods like fruits and vegetables should be taken often, and in a large quantities.

3. Healthy lifestyle

One of the best things a child would grow up to be grateful for is the fact that he/she had a healthy lifestyle in their childhood. Some healthy lifestyle tips are:

Child shouldn’t spend more than 2hours on the television screen

Encourage up to 9 hours smooth sleep daily

Make exercise a habit

Allow fun in between work

Do things that stimulate laughter

4. Health education

Children shouldn’t be seen as being “too young” to know about the risks of stroke and heart disease. The more they know, they more careful they would be about their health. They should be shown what to eat and what not to eat, and given some general instructions for healthy living.

5. Regular examinations

Children should receive frequent health examinations which will help expose any danger signs and guide you on what steps to take next.

Conclusion

It’s never too early to start your child down the road to preventing heart disease in the future. Use these tips to help protect their health and ensure that they live a long life devoid of any heart complications.

It is a condition that affects the effective flow of blood to the heart and thereby damages blood vessels.

In children, heart diseases are usually more fatal, compared to adults, but there are some symptoms that will help you spot them early. Read on to learn about the symptoms of cardiovascular disease in children:

1. Irregular heartbeat

The presence of disease in a heart can cause it to beat irregularly (could be faster or slower). It’s possible for the child to notice how slow or how fast his/her heartbeat has gone in a minute. Once this is observed, cardiovascular disease is a likely diagnosis.

2. Rapid breathing

In this case, the child breathes faster than he/she should within a minute. It is also called hyperventilation. In most cases, it is associated with blood clotting, asthma, and infections.

3. Angina

This can also be referred to as chest pain and it is a common symptom of a heart defect. Children with angina would feel abnormal pain on the chest, due to the insufficient supply of blood to the heart.

4. Fatigue

This is one of the very first symptoms that shows up once there’s a heart disease. The child would get to feel tired more often than normal. With little or no work done, there’s a feeling of exhaustion or decreasing energy levels.

5. Cyanosis

Cyanosis is a physical symptom that causes a blue coloration of the skin. This is due to poor circulation of oxygen in the blood, which eventually affect the tissues that surround the skin.

6. Fever

When a child has fever for a long period of time, there’s likely to be an infection that could result in a heart disease if not properly taken care of. An example of such fever is rheumatoid fever (a fever caused by inflammation and pain in the joints).

7. Lack of appetite

Generally, most children tend to lose their appetite at one point or the other, but if it becomes consistent, there’s a likelihood of there being a heart complication.

Conclusion

Cardiovascular disease is associated with other health complications like diabetes, obesity, asthma and also, depression. Once any of the symptoms listed above are observed in a child, extra precautions should be taken with immediate effect. This is done in order to avoid a worse condition for such children that could result in heart failure and eventually, possibly even death.

Alarmingly, even children are at risk of developing heart disease. There are several heart defects children. Listed below are a few of the more common ones:

1. Congenital heart defect

This is a very common type of heart disease; and occurs as a birth defect found in children. A child with a congenital heart defect is born with an abnormally structured heart or enlarged blood vessels. This condition is often caused by infections during pregnancy which is likely to come from a virus called Rubella.

2. Arrhythmias

Arrhythmias is also known as irregular heartbeat. A child with such disease would have his/her heartbeat running too fast or too slow, which eventually affects sufficient blood circulation in the body. It is often associated with fever and exposure to certain infections.

3. Heart murmurs

Heart murmurs are sounds that are heard from the heart or major blood vessels around it, due to a defect in the heart valves. In some cases, such sounds have no effect on the child and with time, they stop but in others, they could lead to more serious heart complications and would require serious medical attention.

4. Pericarditis

This is the inflammation of the sac that surrounds the heart. This condition irritates the heart and causes it to swell. It is usually caused by infection (viral, fungal, parasitic or bacterial), injury to the chest area, auto-immune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, and etc.

5. Rheumatic heart disease

Rheumatic heart disease is a common acquired heart disease in children. It occurs due to a long-term effect of rheumatic fever (a fever caused by inflammation and pain in the joints resulting from an infection caused by streptococcal bacteria). It can cause permanent damage in the heart valves of such children.

6. Atherosclerosis

This occurs due to the buildup of fats in the coronary artery (the artery that supplies blood and oxygen to the heart). Children are fond of taking foods with high cholesterol and sugar, and these can cause significant amounts of damage to their health.

Embedded fats in the coronary artery cause it to become narrow, and thereby, disturb the flow of blood to the heart. This could lead to hypertension or heart failure, if not managed well.

Conclusion

The number of children with heart disease, increases every day and unfortunately, many of these diseases won’t show up symptoms for as long as a decade, by which time they would have become advanced. To protect your child, be sure to have them examined as often as possible.

However, there is also an ever present snag to this; kids becoming obese. Studies have shown that one in every three children in Dubai is obese, and this doesn’t just have health snags. Obesisty in children also makes them insecure among their peers, subjects of bullying, both verbal and physical, and face segregation from their peers.

Kids becoming obese may not be fully attributed to constant intake of junk food but also lack of exercise and constant playing of unedifying video games.

This article outlines 7 ways to prevent your child from becoming obese.

#1. Be the example to your kids.

Kids do as they see. If you want your kid to eat healthy, the best way to start is by eating healthy yourself and not looking obese. If you are, start exercising as well. It’ll be weird to expect your kid to be in a the proper body shape when you’re not at least making an effort to be.

#2. Be firm. This is in general.

As a parent, you need to be generally firm about your dealings with your children. This, however, does not mean that there should not be a jovial relationship between you and them, but there should be boundaries and rules your children know to adhere to.

Being firm with your children will make the following tasks easier.

#3. Watch their food.

As mentioned above, most kids have the urge to always eat junk food. As much as you may want to give in to their desire, you must understand that it simply is not good for their health. Kids at younger ages need increased protein, vitamins and calcium for their development, of course they also need carbs and a bit of fat, but they need to be more watched in these areas. This is because most junk food that kids enjoy fall in this category. Donuts, fries, ice cream, whipped cream, burgers, and the like.

#4. Exercise with them.

Look for exciting and interesting ways to get your kids to exercise. Perhaps playing a game like ‘hide and seek’ and trying to get them to run more. Another exercise game suitable for kids is ‘musical chairs’, a game where the kids gather round say 10 metres from the chairs and have to keep moving and dancing till the music stops. When it stops, they run to the chair to get a seat before their peer. One kid is left without a seat and is eliminated, as the number of chairs are designed to be one number less that the number of kids playing.

You can even take your kids out to a playground in Dubai, where there are many fun facilities for kids.

#5. Encourage water over liquid calories.

Liquid calories take a shorter time to digest than solid calories. So when kids drink sugary beverages, they get a lot more calories without actually filling them up. The likely outcome is that your kids will eat just as much as they would without taking these sugary beverages. This is too much calories in a day! Instead encourage them to drink water.

#6. Limit their use of video games.

Video games have been shown by studies to make kids lazy, eat junk food more, less willing to do more physical exercise, and have mild insomnia. These games also have ways of becoming addictive, (which I can vouch to from personal experience).

#7. Make obesity undesirable to them.

This can be done using conditioning methods and mild reminders that being obese wouldn’t be the best for them. For example, “When I was your age, I used to work out with my dad because I wanted to feel strong”

Obesity in kids is a growing issue, especially in Dubai. There is so much junk and fun for kids, but despite this, it is imperative to maintain the health of children and save them the depression, and insecurity of being obese.

It’s such a huge concern that they’re government offers a gram of gold for each kilogram they (Emirati kids) shed. Now if that isn’t motivation enough, i don’t know what is. Earlier this year, a cross-sectional survey was constructed amongst 661 adolescents by Nutricion Hospitalaria in Dubai. The study revealed that 27.2% of males and 20.5% of females were obese and 18.5%(males), 13.1% females were overweight. Statistics also revealed that one in three children in Dubai is either overweight or obese, which is understandable considering the amount of junk food so easily available in the country, the complete lack of any form of strenuous physical activity and the high temperatures which limit outdoor activities and lastly, wealth.
With all these factors and more contributing to weight-gain, you’ll need all the inspiration you can get.

1. Consult your doctor

“Consult a physician before starting any exercise program” Gyms, weight-loss reality shows, exercise videos, etc all have similar disclaimers (though we tend to ignore them most of the time). Even better if they’re a specialist (physical therapists or exercise physiologist). This is really important, it would be really dangerous not to,actually. This would help ensure that there are no underlying health issues that could impede your exercise regimen. Or possibly cause a fatal injury…and you don’t want that now, do you? ‘course not! Even if you’re sure you’re good to go, there’s no harm in having a medical check up and consultation. If anything, you’ll benefit from it.

2. Set A Goal

You will need to set a target for yourself in order to have a concrete mindset (what you want to achieve, how you’ll achieve it and when you’ll achieve it). Its okay to set yourself a really hard-to-achieve target because it’ll only motivate you to work hard at it and be more dedicated.
Also, don’t beat yourself up if you end up not achieving your objective on the deadline, the body works in mysterious ways so it might be that your body is just slowly getting used to being more active, physically. The important thing is that you remain determined and consistent.

3. Minimize the junk food as much as possible.

Even better? Be a vegetarian! Easy weight-loss! If that doesn’t work out, you could always switch back to being a meat-eater (which is actually healthier considering the vital nutrients meat contains) . Seriously though, junk food is just really high in calories and low in nutritional value. And you’ll have to agree with me that the last thing you need right now is more calories (actually you don’t need it at all!). I don’t mean you should totally stop eating calorie-dense food, its okay to give yourself little treats here and there to keep you going. But you’ll need to drastically minimize it at least until you start seeing results

4.Exercise/Physical activity

Its extremely important that you start slowly with this and gradually increase the intensity because your body will probably not be used to doing strenuous workouts so it’ll need time to adapt to the changes and because you are looking for long-term results rather than short-term.
With that said, i suggest you start making a few minor changes to your daily lifestyle to increase your physical activity. For example, taking the stairs instead of the elevator, doing more household chores or even yard work. Then you can proceed to taking walks, jogging or moderately intense workouts Even if you’re busy with school, work, whatever there are multiple ways you can incorporate these changes in your weekly schedule. “Where there’s a will, there’s a way” So as long as you’re dedicated and consistent, there’s no way you won’t succeed.

5.Seek for support

This might not seem that important but it actually really is. How? Get your family and friends involved, talk to them about your struggles, maybe even invite them for a workout session and you’ll know how, trust me. They’ll be the ones to get you back on track when it you begin to falter and start losing your motivation. And they’ll be there to console and motivate you when things start to get really tough, which they will (but it’ll be worth it).

6.Make It fun

Most people tend to get carried away by the dynamics of losing weight that they end up forgetting that they could make it fun and enjoy the process as well as achieve they’re objective. If you’re that person, please understand that it’ll actually be more effective if you try to enjoy it as well. Don’t always choose an activity simply because it burns the calories, you could also do activities you find pleasurable. There must be atleast one physical activity that you could see yourself enjoying. Right. Now take that and make it the foundation of your workout regimen and voila you’re having fun and shedding the pounds!

These are all you need to do. Follow these tips consistently and you’ll see immense changes within a month. You’ll feel better, look better, think better, shoot you’ll be better! A better, healthier, happier version of yourself. How great would that be? And all you gotta do is work towards it. Au revoir!

We have thought about this problem and we think that a way to overcome this is to get children to enjoy being in the water by getting them to play fun games in the pool which will help them practice their swimming skills and become much more comfortable in the water. Swimming games could also come in handy when you’re just looking to have fun on an outing or as a family.

Treasure Hunt

Most people who’ve ever spent much time in a pool have played this one, and the concept is really simply. You toss a coin or other “treasure” into the pool and then it the kids jump in to search for it. The object you toss into the pool has to be tiny though and it will usually take quite a while before some sharp eye spots it. This game is a good way to get kids naturally learning how to dive and swim underwater.

Invisible Bottle

The invisible bottle game is much like underwater treasure hunt but with a few differences. In invisible bottle, you fill up a small transparent or translucent plastic bottle with pool water, so that that it practically disappears when you put it in the pool. You toss it into the pool while all the kids are standing outside with their backs turned to the pool (so they don’t see where you tossed the bottle). Once the kids hear the bottle make a splashing sound, they can then jump in and begin to search for it. Obviously, the winner is the person who finds the bottle first.

Submarine Race

The submarine race is pretty much an underwater swimming race. The kids start off at one side of the pol and race over to the other side. It’s pretty straight forward but still fun as the kids try to beat each other. This game helps kids and adults too, improve their underwater swimming technique and also train their lungs. To make the game more interesting, you could make it a relay race with multiple teams.

Octopus

To play octopus in the pool, have one person stand in the middle of the pool with the other players standing at one side of it. The person in the middle is the “Octopus” and will try to tag the other players as they move from one side of the pool to the other in rounds. Once a person is successfully tagged, they have to stand in the middle of the pool and become a part of the octopus by holding hands with the original octopus and continue trying to tag other people once the next round starts. The more people get tagged, the more the group of players in the center begin to look like an actual octopus, thus the name. This is a really fun game and we can guarantee your kids will love playing this Octopus.

Noodle Joust

You will need some gear such as inflatable rafts and pool noodles to play this extremely fun game. Kids will mount inflatable rafts and try to knock each other off with pool noodles. Like most pool games it’s very simple and easy to play, but still very much fun.

Conclusion

There are other fun games kids can play in water and you can even get creative and invent your own. Just remember that water can be dangerous and there should be a qualified life guard on duty at all times to ensure the kid’s safety.
