Stress

Four Emotional Symptoms of Stress

Stress

Stress is the reaction our minds and bodies have to being overworked and it is also the ‘fight or flight’ response to a perceived danger or threat.

Stress has evolved over millions of years primarily to protect and defend us in the face of danger (wild beasts); but now, it has become obsolete and unwanted in our much safer world (where we are no longer under threat of wild beasts). It has outlived its usefulness. In prehistoric times, stress was characterized mostly with fear (as in fear of a wild beast) but in today’s world, It is different. The kinds of stress affecting this new generation  is very distinct compared to the stress of prehistoric times. Although it falls under the category of “hunter and gatherer”but our generation is of a more evolved hunter and gathering style, where our stress comes from the fear of not securing a particular, job, contract, or business(hunting) or when we fail to attain a particular need for our homes, children, and for one’s self (gathering). Stress has evolved from us seeing wild beasts as our only enemy to a much tougher issue of how to survive causing us to react in ways that can be destructive to health.  How can we identify stress especially in our emotions? Is it still the same as in prehistoric times; or is there more to it now? This is how stress affects our emotions.

  1. Fear
    Fear

This emotion is familiar to everybody; it occurs when we are scared, or frightened.

When we are afraid, hormones are released into the body causing the body to be in  a heightened state of alert, panic or apprehension. Fear has very real effects on the body. These effects are meant to protect us from danger. In day to day life, a small amount of fear or insecurity can be beneficial, in that it keeps you on your toes and motivated. However, when fear and insecurity eclipse common sense, these unhealthy thought processes can paralyze your mind and body ,cloud your judgement and prevent you from reaching your goals, which in turn can cause a host of health problems, like headaches, depression, in-digestive problems, and high blood pressure.

  1. Anger
    Anger

When you are stressed, you usually become easily angered, causing you to react in an unwanted manner to colleagues or friends that you might regret later when you are calmer. Anger or wrath is an intense,  normal, usually healthy, human emotion. But when it gets out of control, it can be destructive, and  can lead to problems—problems at work, personal relationships, and in the overall quality of your life.

  1. Depression
    Depression

Depression is more than just a low mood or a feeling of sadness. It is a serious mental condition that has an impact both mentally and physically to the individual. It is an illness that requires instant treatment with a good recovering plan, and if detected early a treatment plan consisting of medication, psychotherapy and lifestyle choices, can help the individual greatly. Stress can cause an individual to go into the rabbit hole.

  1. Anxiety
    Anxiety

Anxiety is a normal emotion that every one experience at times due to work issues, before performing in a concert, on stage (stage fright) or even before taking a test! However Anxiety disorder is very different. This when an individual is diagnosed  with an illness that interferes with the  ability to lead a normal life because they are constantly in worry , fear, nervous,  in panic, and tension, In some extreme cases, social gatherings (where there is a huge crowd) can cause anxiety. Stress is a factor for the early stages of anxiety.

CONCLUSION

These are the 4 emotional symptoms of stress, although the problems of the prehistoric times were different from ours, but the emotions are the same. (One would wonder how they took care of their emotions) These are the emotional symptoms to look out for, as it is important to seek medical attention when you start seeing signs of any of these and to take the necessary precautions to live a much more healthy and peaceful life.
