Maintain blood cholesterol levels within acceptable limits:

Cholesterol, the primary constituents in arterial plaque, has two main components: high-density lipoprotein (HDL) and low-density lipoprotein (LDL). HDL (commonly referred to as the “good” cholesterol) carries cholesterol away from the arterial wall and deposits it in the liver which excretes it. LDL (the “bad” kind of cholesterol) deposits cholesterol into the lining of the coronary arteries, a process that eventually forms plaque.

2. Quit smoking;

If you are a smoker, you have to try as much as possible to quit the act. Effective smoking blocks the vein pipes and arteries and therefore forcing these important pipes that helps in blood supply to the various parts of the body to minimize its function. Smoking is also known to be an act that contributes highly to coronary heart disease. In order to avoid this act of smoking one can isolate himself from a peer smoking gang if he has one and also visit a doctor for councels. Allso, one should be reading more articles on the internet relating to how he can quit smoking.

3. Keep blood sugar level close to normal:

People whose blood sugar level runs high (diabetics in particular), who carry an abnormally high level of body fat and who have unduly high levels of cholesterol and blood lipids (fats), are especially at risk for a heart attack.

4. Effective exercise;

Exercise is one of the best techniques to main a healthy heart. To maintain a healthy hear, one has to be active always. Dullness is a sickness on it own, a healthy heart can’t be achieved if you are always seated at one place or relaxing in bed without not exercising.

5. Avoid eating oily dishes and Take in much roughage (fibre);

Too much fatty meals like meat, palm oil and among many other fatty meals also increase the risk of developing a heart problem. Here you are advised to eat more fibre dishes oranges and apples, potatoes and yams, oaths and wheats. These above mentioned meals help to prevent constipation and allow effective flow of blood by the heart and cuts breaking down food to smaller particles for easy digestion and healthy heart growth.

6. Eat fish more than meat;

Combing a healthy diet with regular exercise, is the best way of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. The single most important step that you can take towards the health of your heart is by what you put on your plate. Here are 5 foods that will help prevent ischemic heart disease.

Oranges –

this help to reduce the blood pressure, cholesterol, and heart failure. Oranges are known to contain a pharmacy’s worth of salves for the heart. The fibre called pectin acts like a giant sponge, which sucks up the cholesterol in the food you eat and blocks its absorption. And the potassium that is contained in the orange helps to fight off the salt, thereby keeping the blood pressure under control.

Kale –

this prevents atherosclerosis. Kale is a dark leafy green and it contains everything that you want in a super food. Kale boasts a bumper crop of heart healthy antioxidants omega-3 fatty acids, fibre, folate, potassium and vitamin E. it also contains a compound called glucoraphanin, which activates a special protective protein.

Garlic –

this reduces blood pressure and plaque. Garlic notches down an enzyme called angiotensin, which constricts the blood vessels.

Red wine –

this boosts the good cholesterol HDL (high density lipoprotein) and it reduces unwanted clotting. Usually any alcohol boosts the HDL which helps to prevent plaque, but red wine offers additional benefits. They contain a compound called polyphenols that help keep blood vessels very flexible and reduces the risk of unwanted clotting. They also have analgesic properties as aspirin should bn. Alcohol consumption should be in moderate levels, because consuming large quantities of it is really harmful to the heart.

Dark chocolate –

this reduces the blood pressure. A researched found out that the Kuna Indians off the coast have very low blood pressure. It was thought they had a rare genetic trait in them, but it was revealed that they drink large quantities of processed cocoa, which is very rich in a compound that is called flavanols, this improves blood vessel flexibility. And dark chocolate is found to have more of this compound because it starts with a higher cocoa content.

Heart disease is one of the major killers of men and women worldwide. Lifestyle can greatly affect one’s health condition, and some people believe that diet can be used to reverse cardiovascular diseases. Living a disease free and healthy life depends on dieting alongside exercise.

Heart disease is as a result of narrowing of the arteries that supply the heart with its needs like oxygen, blood.etc. There are a lot of risk factors that are also related to our daily activities and what we eat and the kind of company we keep. Here are 7 ways that you can reduce the risk of heart diseases.

aside the fact that, as you smoke you are prone to having lung cancer, cigarrete smoking is the number one cause of cardiovascular disease, and also with more than 50% of heart attack for the middle aged women. Risk of getting a cardiovascular disease reduces as you stop smoking.

Lower your cholesterol –

when you have a lot of cholesterol in your body, it increases your chances of developing a coronary heart disease. Extra cholesterol in the body allows the fat deposit to rest on the arteries and causes narrowing of the arteries.

Maintain a healthy weight –

obesity is the leading lifestyle epidemic that contributes to the increased cardiovascular heart disease. This is an important risk factor for women.

Arm yourself with risk- reducing vitamins –

antioxidant vitamin supplements, particular the vitamin E and homocysteine lowering agents such as have good effect in reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease.

Avoid trans-fat –

trans-fat have an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases. This is contained in most margarines. The role of other fatty acids are controversial.

Give yourself some new stress management tool –

poorly controlled stress may have a serious adverse effect on blood lipids. An attitude of hostility has been associated with higher incidence of cardiac events. Meditation improves tolerance and decreases electrical charges that is associated with poor circulation. Some relaxation methods aside meditation are yoga and breathing exercises that help to rid the body of stress.

Ask health professionals about herbs and nutritional

supplements that may be useful in preventing and also useful in treating cardiovascular diseases, these may include blueberry, ginger, turmeric, garlic etc.

Here are 5 common causes of heart failure in women.

Coronary heart disease

This is usually caused by the accumulation of cholesterol in the body, when there is too much intake of fatty foods and it reaches the arteries of the heart and causes a build-up called atherosclerosis, this ends up in becoming angina (chest pain), or if the blood flow becomes obstructed it can lead to heart attack.

High blood pressure

Women are prone to having high blood pressure than men when it becomes it becomes uncontrolled, it increases the risk of having heart failure 2 to 3 times. When the pressure in the blood vessel is high, the heart has to pump harder than normal to keep blood circulating in the body.

Abnormal heart valves

This can result from different conditions, such as an infection, or a defect at birth. When the valves do not open or close properly during each heartbeat. The blood vessels have to work harder to keep blood flowing and this can result in heart failure if care is not taken.

Obesity

women are usually the ones at risk when it comes to obesity, obsessing can be said to be a cause of sleep and apnea (a brief pause in breathing). Obesity causes the heart to work much harder than it would work normally for an individual that is not obese, by pumping more and the workload therefore increases.

Anemia

When the body doesn’t have enough red blood cells in them to carry oxygen round to places that are in need of them. The heart then tries to move the small number of cells that it can at a faster rate, it then becomes overtaxed from the effort.

Conclusion

Generally, heart failure either in men or women occurs when the heart is overworked. So it is better to always get oneself checked out and keep a healthy diet and do exercises once in a while just to keep fit.

However, that’s not the only way heart disease can be contracted. Living an unhealthy lifestyle is basically an invitation to a heart problem. For those, who didn’t inherit this insufferable disease, there are some easy ways to keep yourself guarded against heart disease.

Quit Your Habit

The obvious one is to stop smoking.
Smokers die on average 10 years earlier than non-smokers as shown in a study of a million UK women published last year.
If you can stop smoking before you are 40, you are 10 times less likely to have health problems than if you continue.
As well as benefiting your heart, you will see rapid improvements in your breathing, mood and reduce your risk of stroke, diabetes, cancer, circulation problems, and numerous other problems.

Watch Your Weight

The association between heart disease and being overweight is extremely strong – not least because obesity puts you at risk of type 2 diabetes which, in itself, increases the risk of heart disease and multiple other conditions.
If you carry more weight around your waist than your hips you are even more at risk.
To calculate your waist to hip ratio, divide your waist measurement by your hip measurement.
A high ratio (over 0.85 for women or 1 for men) means an increased risk of health problems such as heart attacks, high blood pressure or diabetes, even if you aren’t that overweight.

Is fat-free best?

You have probably been advised to cut out saturated fats and replace butter with unsaturated fat spreads.
This is because a diet high in saturated fats is thought to be one factor that leads to high levels of bad cholesterol in the blood, which in turn may cause narrowing of the arteries and heart attacks.
However, there is now some controversy as to whether these dietary changes make much difference to your risk of heart disease.
A recent overview of multiple studies found no evidence that restricting saturated fat and increasing polyunsaturated fat consumption lowered the risk of developing heart disease.
The jury is still out on this one, and it shouldn’t be used as an excuse to eat high-fat doughnuts, pastries, chips and other sources of processed, saturated fat.
However, butter, cheese, and cream in small quantities may not be the complete villains they were

Stress life

And finally, while you should be aware of keeping your heart healthy, don’t let it stress you out as stress doesn’t help your heart either.
The stress hormone, ‘cortisol’ can increase unhealthy fat around the middle, raising your risk of heart problems, as well as leading to cravings for high fat and sugar foods, which only make things worse.
So, for a healthy and happy heart, start making a few small changes today – your heart will love you forever.

Say no to sugar

A large population study in the United States showed that people who consumed more than 25 percent of their daily calories from added sugar had an almost three times higher risk of dying from heart disease than those who had less than 10 percent, independent of other risk factors including weight.
More and more evidence suggests that too much sugar is contributing to the obesity and diabetes epidemic too, and as it offers no nutrients whatsoever, it is time to cut back.
Gradually reduce the sugar you add to your food or drinks, avoid fizzy drinks and look carefully at labels – you will be amazed at how much sugar is added to all sorts of food, both sweet and savory

Eat less salt

The British Heart Foundation is clear that too much salt can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart disease later in life.
Adults should have less than six grams (one teaspoon) a day.
Cutting back on salt doesn’t just mean keeping your hands away from the salt cellar when you are eating, there is also a lot of hidden salt in processed food.
Check the labels and cook from scratch wherever possible – then you are in control.
And also, women are as much prone to it as men. Since heart attacks are really serious conditions, it is very crucial to spot out its signs and symptoms before it escalates.

SYMPTOM 1: SEXUAL DYSFUNCTION

Many people think of sexual dysfunction as a problem of the reproductive organs – or the brain.
However, especially in males, sexual dysfunction is a common symptom of arterial disease.
A buildup of plaque in the arteries can cause men to have a hard time achieving – or maintaining an erection.
But for women, a drop in libido usually signals a post-menopausal state.
Yet, women who are post-menopausal ‘rapidly increase’ their risk factors for developing heart disease.
Menopause itself doesn’t cause cardiovascular disease.
Dr. Erwin said: ‘While menopause doesn’t cause cardiovascular diseases, certain heart-health risks – like changes in blood pressure and cholesterol levels – begin around the time of menopause.’

SYMPTOM 2: SNORING OR SLEEP APNEA

Snoring is a common sign of sleep apnea – as is morning sleepiness after a full night’s sleep.
Dr. Erwin said: ‘Sleep apnea – periods of time during sleep where you stop breathing – is associated with many physiological changes that increase the risk of both heart attack and stroke.’
Snoring can also be a sign of atrial fibrillation – which is irregular, often rapid heart rate that causes poor blood flow.
Therefore, the detection and treatment of sleep apnea can lower a person’s risk of heart problems.
So, next time you hear the person next to you snoring, perhaps suggest they see a doctor – instead of just complaining about the noise.

SYMPTOM 3: BLEEDING, SORE OR SWOLLEN GUMS

Few people would ever think that gum problems could be linked to heart disease.
However, unhealthy gums are a symptom of periodontics.
That is a serious gum infection that damages the gums – and can destroy the jawbone.
Periodontitis can actually lead to an increase in inflammation across the body, according to Dr. Erwein.
And, over-activity of inflammatory pathways is a strong risk factor for the development of atherosclerotic heart disease and heart attack.
Thus, it’s recommended that people follow up regularly with their dentist for oral hygiene.
They should also regularly brush and floss their teeth.

SYMPTOM 4: PUFFY FEET AND LEGS

Feet and legs can swell for a variety of reasons – including something as minor as heat.
However, puffy legs and feet can also be a marker of congestive heart failure.
That’s particularly true in cases where a person has unusual shortness of breath with activity – or when trying to sleep.
While it’s also true that some swelling occurs naturally throughout the day, and tends to resolve overnight, persistent swelling is problematic.
People who have constant or worsening swelling of the feet or legs should see a doctor for an evaluation of heart failure.

SYMPTOM 5: INDIGESTION OR HEARTBURN

Heartburn and indigestion are quite common – and rarely serious.
But in some instances, those seemingly benign burning or aching sensations in the upper abdomen can be a sign of heart pain or heart attack.
Additionally, persistent gastrointestinal distress – such as intractable hiccups – can also be a precursor.
And so, when heartburn, indigestion or hiccups are mixed with nausea, sweating, shortness of breath or lightheadedness, people should seek medical attention.
Dr Erwin said: ‘It’s not uncommon to see people come into the emergency room after chewing on antacids for hours before they realize the pain is something more.’

Conclusion:

Heart attacks as we now know come in more than one way, and any above-mentioned sign and symptom should be taken seriously and be reported to the doctor. Also, it’s been reported that women are more likely to die from a heart attack within a year after their first attack.

If a person’s body weight is at least 20% higher than it should be, he or she is considered obese. (Obesity is defined simply as too much body fat)

Obesity is an increasingly widespread metabolic disorder affecting majority of the world’s population. About 35% of the world’s population is obese. As your body mass index(BMI) rises, so does your risk for coronary heart disease (CHD). Obesity also can lead to heart failure. This is a serious condition in which your heart can’t pump enough blood to meet your body’s needs.
Your chances of having high blood pressure are greater if you’re overweight or obese because the blood pressure rises and stays high over time, it can damage the body in many ways.
Being obese or overweight can also lead to the building of harmful bacterias in the arteries. Eventually, an area of plaque can break out, causing a blood clot to form and if the clot is close to your brain, it can block the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain and cause a stroke. The risk of having a stroke rises as your body mass index increases.

Why Obesity Causes Heart Disease

Previously, it was thought that fat was inert. Now scientists understand that fat, especially intra-abdominal fat affects your blood pressure; your blood lipid levels and interferes with your ability to use insulin effectively (you have intra-abdominal fat if you have a big belly). You use insulin to process glucose derived from food, our body’s primary fuel. If you cannot use insulin properly you may develop diabetes, a risk factor of cardiovascular disease.
An extra-large body needs an extra-large amount of blood. When you gain weight, your heart has to pump more blood than it did before. Instead of beating more often, the heart grows slightly larger so it can move more blood with each beat. It’s like a faucet that’s been opened up a notch. The increased flow often leads to high blood pressure, which is a major cause of heart disease.
Extra weight can also be a sign that you’re hurting your heart in other ways. Many people are overweight because they eat high-fat diets and shun exercise. Other people who gained weight with pregnancy and age have found it difficult to get back on an exercise regimen. No matter how much you weigh, fat-filled foods and lack of exercise can damage your arteries and weaken your heart.
Excess body fat can set off a cascade of other changes in the body that raise the risk of heart trouble. If the fat is distributed in the midsection, the risk is higher; a waist measurement of more than 35 inches in women and 40 inches in men spells an increased risk of cardiovascular disease

Conclusion

Finally, getting into more details, it gives in to hypertension and glucose intolerance. obesity alone is still associated with an increased risk of heart disease.

Many foods can help keep your heart at its best. Some help lower your blood pressure. Others keep your keep cholesterol in check. Exercise and a balanced diet are well-known factors that improve heart health, but you may even be surprised there are many other lifestyle factors that can reduce your risk of heart disease.

Making small changes in your habits can make a real difference in your heart health. Even better, you don’t have to work on all different steps at once. Even if you improve just one or two of some areas in keeping your heart healthy, you can make yourself less likely to get heart disease.
Of course, with just some of these tips on this list you can follow, the better. So let’s get started.

Foods beneficial for the heart include:-

Salmon

Salmon is a top choice because it’s rich in omega-3 fatty acids. “Omega-3s have an anti-clotting effect, so they keep your blood flowing,” says Rachel Johnson, Ph.D., RD, Bickford Professor of Nutrition at the University of Vermont. They also help lower your triglycerides (a type of fat that can lead to heart disease). Broiled, grilled or baked, this tasty, fleshy fish improves the metabolic markers for heart disease. It also has rich levels of selenium, an antioxidant which studies have shown boosts cardiovascular protection. Other oily fish like mackerel, tuna, herring, and sardines will give your heart the same boost.

Avocado

This fruit is loaded with monounsaturated fats, also known as “good fats” that can help minimize blood cholesterol and blood clots. But they are also high in calories (240 per average-sized avocado), so go easy. It has a well-established reputation for providing the body and heart with healthy fats. Like olive oil, they’re rich in the monounsaturated fats that may lower heart disease risk factors, such as cholesterol.

Oatmeal

The highly publicized benefits of eating your oatmeal have long shown it’s a wonderful meal for reducing cholesterol. Oats, which are full of omega-3 fatty acids, folate, and potassium have a type of fiber (called beta-glucan) that lowers your cholesterol levels. This fiber-rich superfood can lower levels of LDL (or bad) cholesterol and help keep arteries clear.

Soy milk

It’s high in the organic compound isoflavones, which has been shown to help reduce cholesterol. Unlike animal milk, this beverage contains no cholesterol and is naturally low in fat. In also contains niacin, which helps boost circulation. Soy may help lower cholesterol level, and since it is low in saturated fat, it’s still a great source of lean protein in a heart-healthy diet.

Conclusion

Along with healthy lifestyle choices, what you eat can have a big effect on your heart health like for instance, studies reveal that meditating for 30 minutes daily may lower your risk of heart attack by 50 percent. The study focused specifically on transcendental meditation, which involves sitting quietly and comfortably 15 to 20 minutes per day, and is easily learned, researchers say. Studies have also shown that adults who have a positive outlook on life reduce their chance of a heart attack. Those who regularly feel gratitude for their life circumstances or express it to others have a better chance of living longer and having a healthier life. Focus on happy times from your past. Research has shown that recalling good memories helps your immune system, and your overall good health, which in turn strengthens your heart.

Unfortunately, heart diseases happen to be a major risk of death in our world today. There are different types of CVD and a very common one is the Coronary Artery Disease (CAD). Asides coronary artery disease, there are however, lots more that you probably never knew of.

Below are 6 heart diseases that you should know.

1. Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

Coronary artery disease, also known as ischemic heart disease (IHD), happens to be the most common type of heart diseases and has so far been considered a major leading cause of death. This disease occurs when the blood vessel that supplies the heart, otherwise known as coronary artery, is damaged. The damage could be as a result of inflammation or the building of fats on the walls of the artery. It is often associated with chest pain (angina), shortness of breath (apnea), discomfort, weakness, and many more. CAD can also be called a silent killer because it’s likely not to show any symptom for decades until the individual eventually have a heart attack.

2. Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD)

Rheumatic heart disease results from Rheumatic fever, which is a very common sickness in children in underdeveloped countries, or locations stricken in poverty. It causes damage to the heart valves and ends up weakening the muscles that surrounds the heart. As a result of this, the heart is forced to work harder in pumping blood, which would increase the individual’s blood pressure and can eventually lead to heart failure

3. Inflammatory Heart Disease (IHD)

In inflammatory heart disease, there is inflammation of the muscles of the heart (myocardium), the sac that covers the heart (pericardium), and the inner lining of the heart (endocarditis). It is often caused by toxic substances that attacks the heart or viral infections like: HIV, Hepatitis C, Coxsackie B virus, Cytomegalovirus, etc.

4. Hypertensive Heart Disease (HHD)

Hypertensive heart disease is the first dangerous risk of high blood pressure. It is caused by certain infections on some organs in the body and also associated with some other cardiovascular diseases. This condition, however, may eventually lead to death sooner than you think.

5. Cerebrovascular Disease (CBVD)

Cerebrovascular disease is a condition that pertains to the blood vessels connected to the brain and thereby affects blood circulation in the brain. It is often associated with stroke and vascular dementia (an impairment in mental ability).

6. Heart Failure (HF)

Heart failure, also known as congestive heart failure (CHF), occurs when there’s a weakening of the heart muscle, leading to an ineffective blood circulation in the heart. The lack of adequate blood supply deprives the heart of blood and oxygen when it most needs it. This condition is associated with all kinds of cardiovascular diseases and results to death.

Conclusion

The heart is responsible for blood supply to the body, and damage to it can affect how the body works, and can also lead to death. However, there are preventive measures, like working out, avoiding too much fatty foods, staying away from alcohol, cigarettes, and hard drugs, checking your blood pressure constantly, and eating healthy meals
