One of the best things about yoga is the ability to take your workout anywhere, and as the weather warms up, “anywhere” more specifically means outside. (It’s way better than being stuck in a smelly, hot gym for an hour.) We’re talking’ mountaintops, beaches, parks, your own backyard, you name it. Here’s why you should ditch the studio this summer:

The terrain pushes your boundaries. It’s easy to get stuck in a routine, and taking yoga outside helps get you out of that rut. “Outdoor yoga challenges you with uneven ground and varying surfaces.

There’s no competition for floor space. It’s happened to everyone; you get to a yoga class and it’s so packed you’re finger-to-finger during warrior pose. That’s a non-issue when you take your mat outside. Research has also found that “grounding” yourself, or simply having direct contact with the earth—sand, rock, grass—can reduce the risk of heart problems, pain, and stress.)

You’ll be one with nature. Exercising outdoors has been said to boost your self-esteem, and soaking up some vitamin D from the sun has been shown to decrease the risk of depression. You don’t need to sit directly in the sun to reap the benefits, which could actually be dangerous if the temperature and humidity were extremely high. Simply practicing meditation and yoga in the shade will send those feel-good signals to your brain. (You still need to wear a layer of sunscreen While daylight will make you feel good, a sunburn will not.)

You really learn what it means to “zen out. “Practicing yoga outside means you lose the safe and familiar space of a studio and are vulnerable to what’s going on around you. “You’re at the whim of what nature brings you. You know, like that ant that’s tickling your arm as you get into the downward facing dog or that fly that’s buzzing around your ear as you try to control your breath. This forces you to control your reactions, deepening your practice.

You’ll feel connected to your neighborhood. “The first time I did it I felt vulnerable and exposed. I lost the privacy of the wall and all those people walking by could see me. “But 20 minutes into the practice I didn’t hear the buses, traffic, or people. I just heard the birds and trees and I ended feeling more connected to my neighborhood.

It’s beautiful—period. Sure, some yoga studios try their best to create a zen, pretty aesthetic, but no amount can compare to a stunning vista. “The beauty around you can help inspire your practice. I ask people to take in the beauty before they close their eyes.”

For some people, yoga is being able to bend so well, and they sometimes give up since they lack the ability to bend. Often times, we forget that yoga is not only about doing the perfect bend, but about connecting the body, breath, and mind, which is why it is known to boost mood and get rid of depression.
You have probably been feeling bad about not being able to maintain your yoga skills or to get better with it, the following tips should help you

1. Take a wider stance to create more space

To get better in your yoga skills, you will have to maximize your space. Extend your arms and legs as much as you can, to enable freedom in your muscles, rather getting all choked up. You need that space.

2. Respect the limit of your own body

It’s no doubt that different people have different limits with which they can bend. The fact that someone can bend so much that the nose comes in contact with the knee, doesn’t mean every other person can do same, especially if you are a beginner. Of course, you can improve your body flexibility, but it should be a gradual process. Love your body and know your limit in yoga; it is important that you are comfortable and stable.

3. Unlock your knees

Another interesting tip to keep you going is to learn to unlock your knees. You might feel the urge to lock your knees whenever you want to perform any yoga exercise like forwarding bend, as it may look proper that way. But the fact remains that you do lesser work when your knees are locked. With unlocked knees, it won’t be easy to maintain the pose for a long period of time, which means the pose is actually working on your muscles. One more benefit of keeping unlocked knees is that it prevents you from having unnecessary joint pains. You can avoid those pains now, just by keeping your knees unlocked.

4. Smile often

You have to be joyful while practicing yoga, as the mind is connected with it. No matter what goes wrong in your yoga practice, don’t forget your smiles. Either you are not comfortable with your bends or you have overstretched too much, try to be better and don’t lose your smile, to avoid getting more frustrated. With time, you will improve and will even be able to smile more.

5. Observe

You should be very observant of things around you, and most especially your body. Observation makes you know if you still need improvements, and where. Observe if you are using your right hand better than the left, or your first pose is always the best and when you repeat it, it goes wrong. Observe these things, and be better.

Conclusion

Above all, consistency is key. You have to be consistent in order to improve your yoga skills. We really hope this helps.

Here are some of the benefits of yoga:

Flexibility

All the stretching will make poses you deemed impossible, possible and you will notice the pains disappear.

Muscle strength

Yoga provides added protection from arthritis and back pain. For older people, the chances of falling are lower. Muscle strength through yoga is balanced with flexibility, unlike lifting weights at the gym where strength is built at the expense of flexibility.

Posture

As your head is balanced over an erect spine, it is less work for your neck and back muscles to support your head. Having a perfect posture reduces the likelihood of straining those muscles. Slumping flattens the normal inward curves in the neck and lower back causing pain and degenerative arthritis of the spine.

Blood flow

The relaxation exercises aids circulation, especially in your hands and feet. Poses involving twists wring out venous blood from internal organs, allowing oxygenated blood to flow as the twist is released. Inverted poses let venous blood from the legs and pelvis flow down to the heart, then the lungs to be oxygenated. This helps with swelling in your legs if you have kidney or heart issues. Levels of hemoglobin and red blood cells are boosted and it thins the blood and also declines the level of clot-promoting proteins. Yoga will decrease the chances of heart attacks and strokes.

Bone health

Weight-bearing exercises don’t just strengthen bones but also a ward of osteoporosis and in yoga, there are many postures requiring lifting your own weight. Yoga has the ability to decrease levels of the stress hormone cortisol, which may aid keep calcium in bones.
Prevents cartilage and joint breakdown
Yoga takes your joints through their full range of motion, preventing degenerative arthritis or mitigate a disability. Neglected areas of cartilage that lack proper sustenance can wear out eventually and expose the underlying bone.

Boosts immunity and drains lymph

Contracting and stretching muscles, moving organs, and whilst moving in and out of yoga postures, lymph drainage is increased, helping the lymphatic system fight infections and damage cancerous cells and also discarding the toxic waste material of cellular functioning.

Many people suffer from lower back pain, which could hinder them from doing some physical activities effectively. Driving, for example, could be difficult to do in this situation, and also some basic house chores and other things that will require the use of the back.

However, yoga poses have so far been known as the best way to strengthen and relieve the back of any pain. Below are some yoga poses that can help strengthen the back

1. Cat/cow poses

Cat/cow, like its name implies, is a pair of yoga poses merged into one. Get on your hands and knees, with hands lined beneath your shoulders, and knees aligned with your hips. Inhale slowly and deeply, and try to bend your spine, such that your belly is drawn towards the floor, head tilted back, and bottom lifted towards the sky. Then, exhale, and try to push belly inward, with back arched up, chin curled towards your chest, and tail bone tucked in under. Keep alternating these two poses for as many times as you can.

This pose helps to improve spinal flexibility and abdominal strength

2. Cobra Pose

Cobra pose helps to open the chest and lungs and is also great for back pain relief. It prepares the body for deeper bends, increases the flexibility of the spine, and stretches the chest.

To do this, lie face down on the floor with legs extended behind you, and spread them a few inches apart. Ensure the top of your feet are resting on the mat/floor and your toes are not tucked, so as not to crush your spine. Place hands beneath your shoulders, and point your fingers towards the top of the mat with your elbows hugged into the sides of your body. Now, press down, and spread your toes.

Inhale; lift head and chest off the floor, and keep shoulders back. Look straight, and remain in the position for a few breaths.

3. Wall Plank

Wall plank gives the body befitting stamina if done consistently. Stand in front of the wall at arm-length, and reach out with your shoulders while you place your palms on the wall. Widen your fingers, and let the middle fingers be directed towards the ceiling. Make fingers firmer on the wall and pull navel back whilst you lengthen tailbone towards the floor, and lift your ribs from the pelvis.

Now, try to walk the legs back, folding at the waist, and hands walking down the wall. This should give your body an inverted L-shape; tailbone and legs into the floor, navel, and ribs drawn into the body, and spine, arms, and head towards the wall. Remain in this position for some seconds, then repeat for 10-20 breaths.

Conclusion

Back pain is sometimes caused by sitting for long hours and can be managed by strengthening the back often. This will help to reduce weakness, sciatica, back spasms, limited mobility, severe lower back pain, etc.

Many people cringe at the thought of stretching out their muscles at the end of a workout session, wondering why the muscles should be stretched after a long workout. Some people complain about the lack of time, and for some others, it’s just ignorance.

Stretching the muscles, after working out, is vital; it keeps you nice and flexible, and also prevents cramps and any kind of pain or injury after workout sessions.

Below are 5 yoga poses for relaxation or cooling down

1. Child Pose

This pose helps to cool down the body. Start from a kneeling position; knees firmly together. Rest your buttocks on your heels and let your back be aligned straight. Exhale; bend forward till your forehead touches the floor and try not to lift your buttocks off your heels while you do this. Place your arms on the floor, far ahead of your head, with elbows off the floor. Alternatively, you can also place your arms by the sides of your feet; palms faced up. Maintain this pose for some seconds.

2. Happy baby pose

Happy baby pose helps to stretch the hips and groin, and also strengthen the torso of the body.

Lie on your back, with both knees drawn in toward the chest, and grip your feet with your hands. You can also make use of a band or strap to grip the feet better. Rest your torso firmly on the mat and gently begin to open the knees to the sides. While you open up the knees, draw the soles of your feet, gently, towards the ceiling. Keep your ankles aligned with your knees, such that your lower limbs draw a perpendicular to the floor. For a greater stretch, press your hands into your feet, and feet into your hands, equally and firmly. Remain in this pose for about 20 to 30 seconds.

3. Warrior 1 pose

The warrior pose is one yoga exercise that shouldn’t be excluded in the relaxation exercises as it works to stretch all the muscles, and also stabilizes the feet and knees. Stand with feet apart, about twice the width of the hips. Then, turn your left foot inwards about 40 degrees, and your right outwards, about 90 degrees. Breathe slowly, and adjust your hips towards the right and bend your right knee at 90 degrees.

Now, rest your left foot on its toes and stretch your arms upwards, such that your palms can feel each other. Turn your head toward the sky, looking at your joint palms, and at the same time, stretch your back and shoulders. Return to the original position gently and repeat the process on the other side.

4. Wide-legged forward fold pose

This pose works effectively on the lower part of the body, majorly on the hamstrings, calves, and inner thighs.

From a standing position, place hands on your hips and face forward. Move feet about 3 to 4 feet apart, or better still, as far as you can. Ensure your feet are parallel to one another, and toes are confidently pointing forward. Engage your core to maintain length in the spine. Exhale; hinge at the hips, while your torso folds forward and forehead is directed towards the floor. Release your arms and hands slowly towards the floor or you lock them behind you. Try to keep a slight bend in the knees for joint protection. Inhale and remain in this position for as long as you can, preferably half-a-minute.

5. Corpse Pose

The corpse pose helps to relax all the muscles of the body, and it’s best to end your relaxation period with this pose.

Lie down on your back, and keep your back, arms, and legs by your side, approximately 45 degrees away from your body. Feel relaxed as much as you can, and pull shoulders down. Relax every part of your body; from your extremities to the arms, legs, torso, neck, and head. Also, relax your face, and open your mouth a bit and eyes shut. Breathe deeply and maintain this position for about 10 minutes.

Conclusion

This yoga poses helps to restore workout muscles and prevent them from going through strains or cramps. Keeping cooling down with yoga poses and have a balanced healthy life.

Though some people think it’s all about sitting down and meditating, modern science is starting to realize its benefits in preventing and treating some diseases while keeping you calm and happy.

Listed below are few benefits of yoga and reasons why you need to embrace it.

1. Flexibility

One of the first visible benefits of yoga is improved flexibility. Initially, there might be some difficulties doing certain poses but with dedicated practice, there will be some loosening and ‘impossible’ poses will become easier to accomplish and the initial aches and pain would stop.

2. Improved balance

Regular yoga practice improves your balance and proprioception. Improved balance could reduce the number of falls and injuries and could be very helpful for the elderly.

#3. Improves Posture

Poor posture can cause back, neck and joint pains. Yoga provides your body with the necessary support it needs to carry your body’s weight while giving you a better posture.

#4. Protects the Spine

Intervertebral disks between the spinal vertebrae needs to move in order to get nutrients. These disks can herniate and compress spinal nerves, leading to neurological problems. Yoga provides the right movements to prevent disk herniation.

#5. Increases general blood flow

Relaxation exercises in yoga has a way of improving blood flow in the body. This means more oxygen to cells and better body functioning as you don’t get to feel tired too often. Poses like twisting poses and inverted poses help to return venous blood from areas of the body to the heart to get oxygenated. This could reduce chances of blood clots and subsequent heart problems.

#6. Makes you happy

Yoga has been proven to reduce the level of cortisol (stress hormone) and monoamine oxidase, which is responsible for degrading neurotransmitters. It increases the level of happy hormones like serotonin and also improves immune function.

#7. Improves bone health

Along with reducing the risk of osteoporosis by improving bone strength and density through weight bearing exercises, yoga also reduces levels of stress hormones, thereby preserving calcium in the bones.

#8. Improves your focus

Yoga helps you focus on the present. Research shows that yoga improves coordination, memory, IQ, reflex and reaction time. Meditation in yoga helps improve your ability to solve problems and remember things accurately.

#9. Helps you feel calm and boosts your immune system

Yoga helps you relax and take deep breaths, allowing the parasympathetic system (needed for normal body processes) to predominate. This system is responsible for homeostasis and increases blood flow to the GI tract and reproductive organs. Yoga also helps the immune system function when needed, thereby preventing autoimmune problems.

#10. Helps you sleep

Relaxation exercises and poses in yoga helps relief you from daily life stress.Regular yoga helps relax the nervous system, which helps you sleep better and prevents you from being too grumpy.Yoga helps keep you strong and healthy, why not step on that mat and meditate to happiness.

Conclusion

Having a fat face can be embarrassing and not too pleasing and for this reason, you start thinking of ways to make your face slimmer

The good news however, is that you don’t need to look too far. Asides the fact that yoga helps you lose weight, it can also get rid of flabby cheeks and double chin. It will help to reshape your entire facial structure; giving your face a slim and sculpted look.

Below are a number of effective facial yoga exercises:

1. Lion pose

The lion pose is known to be the most effective yoga pose for making the face slimmer.
Stoop on the floor with palms on the knees. Ensure that your palms and all 10 fingers are straight as much as possible. Inhale deeply with your mouth open, jaw dropped, and tongue stuck out downwards. Then, exhale through your mouth and make a sound like that of a lion. This pose will help to tone up the muscles of the face, and as time goes on, it will help the face to become slimmer.

2. Chin lifts

This pose focuses on the chin and lips. To do this, you will have to focus on the ceiling; ensure your gaze are up. While you’re still on that, pull your lips together and make them very tight. Remain in that position for about 10seconds, after which you can relax and repeat the same process.

3. Blowing air

Keep your spine in an erect position and tilt your head to the back, with your gaze directed towards the ceiling. Pull out your lips and blow air. Keep blowing air for about 10 seconds or more. Do this repeatedly.

4. Locked tongue

This pose helps to shape the jaw line and gives a sharp and smart look.
Sit straight on the ground, with legs crossed and hands placed on your laps. Roll your tongue up to touch the upper palate of your mouth with its tip. Try to open your mouth as wide as you can, with your tongue still in that position. This will result in a feeling of extreme stretch on your face and throat. Remain in that position until you can no longer hold the pose. The locked tongue pose helps effectively to boost blood circulation throughout the face, and in addition, tone face muscles.

5. Smiling fish face

This pose, just like its name, requires you to form your face into a fish-like face. While making a smiling face, push your lips a little, withdraw your cheeks, and squeeze them into the hollows of your face. Remain in this position for about 10seconds or more and repeat the action.

6. Marilyn

This is a very simple yoga pose that is also very effective. Blow kisses into the air, repeat it for about four times. Then, press your lips against two fingers and also repeat for about four times. Relax, and repeat the process.

Conclusion

Face yoga helps to train and strengthen the muscles around the face, to get rid of baggy eyes, fatty cheeks, wrinkles, etc. Some effective face yoga poses have been mentioned above. Do them continually and be sure to see positive result with time.

Asides from the fact that it will obviously improve your look, strong core muscles are essential for effectively carrying out a wide range of sporting and regular everyday activities. It also helps to prevent injuries, low back pain, and other associating body pains.

Today, crunches seems to be a very popular exercise for strengthening the core. If you would love to change up your routine, practicing yoga is a sure alternative to build strong core muscles.

Other benefits attached to performing crunches are that it helps to maintain an ideal body posture, and protect the spine.

Below are some yoga poses which will help you develop the core strength you desire:

1. Standing poses

A very effective kind of standing pose, is the tree pose. Although it seems simple, it engages all the core muscles and helps maintain balance.

The tree pose is one-footed, and the weight can be placed on either the right foot or the left. Place your right foot on the ground, and gradually shift all your weight to your right foot so that you can move your left foot freely. Spread your toes widely for balance. Your chin should be up—parallel to the ground, and with eyes open, set your gaze on an object in front of you, or on the floor, to maintain focus and balance.

Now, lift your left leg off the ground, and slowly bend your knee to 90 degree angle. Place the sole of your left foot on the inside of your right legs, and open up your hips by pulling your left knee backwards.

Then, bring your hands together in front of your chest, with your legs and feet pressed together towards the center of your body. Your spine should be lengthened by pulling your shoulders back from your ears.

Raise your hands shoulder-width apart from your head, and try to hold pose for about 5-10 breaths, after which you can release pose slowly and gently.

2. Hovering cat

This is also very effective for strengthening the core muscles. Get down on your hands and knees—as a starting position—and extend your legs out behind, so that your toes are together and touching the floor. Then, proceed by lowering your arms so that you are resting on your forearms with your elbows bent directly under your shoulder, with your body extended and remain in this position for as long as you can. Do it repeatedly for effective results.

3. Alternate arm/leg pose

Another way to build strong core muscles, is to do the alternate arm/leg pose. It provides a gentle massage to not only the core, but also to the spine and abdominal organs.

Start off by positioning your hands and knees, with your wrists under your shoulders and knees under your hips. Then, inhale and stretch your right arm forward along your ear whilst you extend your left leg straight back behind, with your foot lifted off the ground.

Exhale; lower your right arm and left leg down. Then, inhale and stretch your left arm alongside your ear, while you extend the right leg straight back behind you. Exhale, and lower down. Keep alternating sides, performing at least 5 reps on either side.

Conclusion

The above are a few major yoga poses for strengthening the core muscles. To get effective results, it’s advisable to perform these poses accurately and consistently.

Some expectant women often wonder what to do to remain fit while in pregnancy. While some see it as being near-impossible, some others find it very strenuous. Being pregnant doesn’t mean you should quit your fitness program—if you were in one before—or believe that it’s impossible to workout. You only need to do it safely, by choosing a routine with extra care.

Asides working out, there are several other ways to stay fit as a mom-to-be. We’ll be sharing some easy ones that we believe would be helpful.

1. Drink water in excess

Drinking water is one of the easiest ways to maintain a stable metabolism. It doesn’t matter what your workout regime is like, you should take water as much as you can. Drink before, during, and after workouts. With sufficient amounts of water in the body, there’ll be easier and faster transportation of nutrients throughout the body. In addition, it also helps to keep the body hydrated and the joints lubricated, for stable health.

2. Don’t over-exert yourself

In pregnancy, there’s a need to listen to what your body tells you all the time. Be considerate and try to understand the message your body is trying to pass across. While exercising, you could be endangering your health and that of your child, if your body is asking for some rest and you are not paying attention. This could cause muscle strain, fatigue, and other health complications.

3. Engage in cardiovascular exercise

Doing cardiovascular exercises will help you maintain your fitness and keep your pregnancy comfortable. It is more advisable to do the exercises you are familiar with, to avoid unnecessary fatigue. It could be walking, swimming, or running at a low pace. Results will be observable, if consistent.

4. Practice regular yoga

Practicing yoga seems to be the most perfect way to stay fit during pregnancy. This exercise helps to relieve back pain, cramps, and mood swings. As a mum-to-be, it gives a healthier feel and keeps you fit.

5. Eat a healthy and well-balanced diet

A healthy and well-balanced diet improves your health and that of your unborn child. Foods like almonds, eggs, fruits and vegetables, should be taken more often.

6. Avoid alcohol

Taking alcohol while pregnant will do you no good, so it is best you keep off from it totally. Alcohol increases the health risk of both you and your unborn child.

Conclusion

One of the very first things that excites a mother, after giving birth, is realizing that she gave birth to a healthy child. If you are pregnant, you should endeavor to stay fit, as it won’t just add to your beauty, but will also increase the wellness of both you and your child.
