If you have not read it already, please read Rock Climbing Dangers and The Safety System Part 1

The Major Parts Of The Safety System

The Harness: A harness is a piece of equipment designed to attach your body to the rope. It usually consists of two major parts, the belt and leg loops. The belt is designed to absorb the majority of force put on the harness and transfer it to your hips and pelvis, which are the parts of your body most capable of sustaining such forces without injury. The leg loops wrap around each thigh, and primarily function to prevent the belt portion of the harness from riding up above the wearer’s waist. If the belt were allowed to ride up above the waist, it could restrict breathing and even cause suffocation. Harnesses are produced by many major gear manufacturers, and can usually be had for between $40 – $120, depending on brand and features.

The Rope: A modern climbing rope is constructed of Nylon, and is woven in what is known as a Kernmantle style. It has two major parts, the inner weight bearing yarns (or kern), and the woven protective sheath (or mantle). The rope primarily acts like a giant spring or shock absorber to absorb the force of a fall before it reaches the climber’s harness, a quality known as “dynamic” (i.e. it stretches). Beware that some ropes are known as “static” (they don’t stretch very much) and are not suitable for most climbing applications and should be avoided by the beginner climber. Modern ropes vary in diameter depending on their intended usage, usually come in lengths from 50 – 70 meters (165 – 230 feet), and generally cost between $120 – $250 each.

The Belay: Simply put, A belay is a method of applying friction to a running rope. Generally while climbing you will be working in a team of two, a climber and a belayer. The belayer’s function is to pay out or take in rope as required by the climber and, most importantly, to hold any fall (by applying friction to the rope) taken by the climber. Most people use a specialized belay device which assists them in applying friction to the rope, although there are methods of belay which do not use any special device. The belayer’s job of keeping the climber from hitting the ground (or anything else) is understandably quite important to the entire function of the safety system, thus people new to belaying should take an instructional course from a qualified instructor before taking a live person’s life in their hands.

You will learn what it really is and you will also learn who to call if you want to do Rock Climbing in Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Sharja, Ajman or RAK.

What About The Danger?

Normally the first reaction of a “layperson” when you tell them that you enjoy rock climbing is shock and amazement that you could possibly enjoy such a dangerous sport. Indeed, some types of climbing can be exceedingly lethal for even the most experienced and hardened of climbers. Alpine and Expedition climbers (more on what these terms mean in a minute) tend to hang around in the most extreme environments on earth with a razor-thin safety margin of time and equipment, and accordingly, every year several to several dozen never return home from the mountains. However, talk to the typical indoor gym climber, and the most serious injury they have probably witnessed may be a twisted or sprained ankle.

What it comes down to, in the end, is that climbing is as safe or dangerous as you make it. Indeed, one of the most emphasized skills that beginning climbers are taught (or should be) is risk assessment. Just as in every day life, where we assess the risk of fairly mundane activities like driving to work or climbing a ladder, we must asses the danger of every move we make in the mountains, and decide if the risk is acceptable or another course of action needs to be taken. What exactly constitutes an acceptable risk is a personal choice of each climber, and is a subject worth pondering before you ever set foot in the mountains.

The Climber’s Safety System

As climbers, we inherently struggle against the force of gravity. It opposes our every move upward, and
sometimes even the most prudent or wary climber will lose that struggle and fall. Luckily for us, the sport of climbing today enjoys the luxury of equipment which is light, durable, monumentally strong, and probably the most thoroughly tested of any sporting goods on earth. In most types of climbing (with the exception of bouldering, explained below), various pieces of this equipment are combined to form what is know n as the safety system.

Most people generally picture one type of equipment associated with climbing, and that is, of course, the rope. However, as you’ll see below, the rope is only one part of the climber’s safety system. The rope is nothing without the rest of the system. Many an excellent climber has died on the end of a perfectly good rope which could not save them because it was not part of a satisfactory overall system. Always be sure that your entire system is in place and functioning properly, and it will save your life faithfully. Neglect even one part of the overall system, and you may find yourself in a deadly situation.

Rock Climbing is not really a single sport, but a collection of different disciplines that all share a common goal: challenging yourself to reach the top. What exactly you’re aspiring to reach the top of depends on the type of climbing you are engaging in (more on this shortly). Bouldering may take you no more than a few feet off the ground, and all you need is rock shoes and maybe a little hand chalk to participate. Expedition climbing, by contrast, may take you up (and hopefully back down) the highest peaks in the world, as a member of teams that utilize hundreds of thousands of dollars in equipment and take months or years to plan. Given the huge range of climbing types, there is no “standard goal” that all rock climbers share, it is entirely up to you where you would like the sport to take you.

Therein lies the beauty of the sport of rock climbing. It is unlike most other sports, in that there are no winners or losers, and indeed, no objective measure of success or victory. This is not football, where only one team wins the Super Bowl. Your only opponent when you find yourself in the high places of this world is yourself, and a true rock climber knows that he competes only against his own fear, ego, and self-doubt. New climbers tend to think of themselves as being matched against the mountain in a struggle of will, but the mountain is not a conscious entity, waiting to spite some and give others glory. The mountain is eternal and uncaring, and the only difference between yourself and the guy who will come tomorrow and climb that mountain is you.

Make no mistake, rock climbing will challenge you like nothing ever has, but it can also reward your monumental efforts as no activity ever has before. Climbing is hard, sometimes harder than most people can imagine, and not everyone is up to the challenge. There is, of course, only one way to find out!
